Internship Preparation Timeline

Junior Year : Senior Year

The following information is provided to students as a general outline to help prepare for postdoctoral training.  Individual programs may have application due dates not listed herein and therefore students should use this timeline as a guide only.

Junior Year (9 Months)
September - May
  • Begin MS3 assigned CORE rotations. 
  • Network with housestaff and preceptors- asking about their postgraduate experiences: Where and when? Why choose a program? Strengths or weakness? 
  • Request letters of recommendation AS YOU GO (Don't wait until May).
December – April
  • Search AOA Opportunities page for osteopathic programs meeting your geographic and specialty interests. Consider these programs as potential elective rotation experiences. (The FREIDA and NRMP web-sites contain information about allopathic residency programs.) 
  • Make telephone, mail or e-mail inquiries requesting extern rotation applications.
February - May
  • Work with Regional Dean & Coordinator to begin plotting desired MS4 schedule, including elective months.
May
  • Finalize elective schedule keeping in mind potential interviews summer thru fall. 
  • Complete MS3 CORE testing (and attend state convention, as assigned).
Senior Year (12 Months)
June
  • Begin MS4 REQUIRED and ELECTIVE rotations. Elective rotations should focus on specialty interests desired for post-graduate training
  • KCOM distributes application for participation in AOA Match
  • ACGME Match applications available at NRMP for "Independents" (DO & FMG)
June - Aug.
  • Prepare for COMLEX Part II (Boards)
June – Dec.
  • Continue exploring potential postgraduate training sites
  • Request applications for preferred programs. NOTE: Institutions participating in ERAS will only accept electronic applications
July
  • ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) materials distributed to students
  • Dean's Letter available for student review at Regional Dean's Office
  • Dean's Letter distribution handled through KCOM Regional Affairs (both ERAS and institution specific)
August
  • Take COMLEX Part II at an approved testing site
October
  • Deadline for application to participate in the AOA Match (10/12/01)
November
  • Complete final internship interviews. Send follow-up correspondence to interviewers.
December
  • Deadline for application to participate in the NRMP (allopathic) Match (12/1/01)
January
  • Deadline for submission of "rank order lists" rating your most desired AOA programs (1/25/02). Programs also submit a "rank order list" of most desired applicants.
February
  • AOA Match Day (2/11/02). Students and programs have 30 days to finalize contracts.
  • Deadline for submission of "rank order lists" for NRMP Match (2/21/02)
March
  • NRMP Match (3/18/02)
June
  • KCOM graduation
  • Graduates apply for temporary licensure within state of PGY1 employment
  • Orientation, health screening and certification training prior to the start of internship
