AOA (American Osteopathic Association)

All graduates of osteopathic medical schools must complete an AOA-approved rotating internship (Post-Graduate Year-1) before beginning osteopathic specialty training, (although specialty track internships in Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Otolaryngology/Facial Plastic Surgery, Pediatrics, and Urological Surgery essentially eliminate the requirement in these specialties).

Students are responsible for submitting applications to internship and residency programs in which they are interested. Furthermore, they must enroll in the AOA's Intern Registration Program (IRP) and pay the appropriate application fee. The IRP includes traditional rotating internships, specialty track internships, and a new feature for matching PGY-2 and PGY-3 residency positions, beginning in 2001. Osteopaths with military commitments participate in the military matching program first and subsequently may participate in the osteopathic match thereafter, if unsuccessful.
