Position Responsibilities: The Anatomy Chair must demonstrate excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Duties will include oversight of Anatomy faculty and teaching fellows; didactic instruction and laboratory training of osteopathic medical students; innovative curricular design, implementation and assessment; serving on College and University committees; and assisting in special projects, grants, and other administrative duties. The Anatomy Chair will maintain a productive basic science or clinical science research program as demonstrated by a record of publication and extramural funding.
Position Requirements:
- Education and Experience – Applicants must have an earned doctorate degree (Ph.D./D.O./M.D. or equivalent) and show evidence of expertise in human anatomy or a related discipline. Physicians with additional expertise in radiology or surgery are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a minimum of 5 years experience teaching in a medical school and possess the rank of associate or full professor at the time of application. Prior experience in an academic leadership position (e.g., course director, chair, section head) is required.
- Teaching – Applicants must have a sincere interest in medical education and a commitment to conduct a quality teaching program. The Anatomy Chair will supervise and participate in didactic instruction and laboratory training of osteopathic medical students in the areas of Gross Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Embryology, and/or Histology. Further, the Anatomy Chair will take an active role in the development and implementation of a new Clinical Presentations curricular model, which is scheduled to replace the current discipline-based medical curriculum in 2012. Therefore, preference will be given to applicants with experience in the development of a Clinical Presentations Curriculum and the identification of assessment issues.
- Research – Applicants should demonstrate a record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications and extramural funding in support of a basic science or clinical science research program. Applicants should be willing to mentor medical students, graduate students, and residents interested in gaining research experience.
- Service – Applicants should be willing to assist the College and University by serving on committees, interviewing college applicants, mentoring students through the Learning Societies Program, and performing other duties as needed.
- Other – Applicants should exhibit the professional, moral and ethical characteristics appropriate for a medical school faculty member. The applicant should find the small community lifestyle to be attractive.
The Department: The Department of Anatomy currently consists of 5 full-time faculty, 2 adjunct faculty, 2 emeritus professors who continue to be active in the department, 4 undergraduate anatomy teaching fellows, and 3 graduate students in the Anatomy Education Track of the Masters in Biomedical Sciences degree program. Support staff include a departmental technician and an executive secretary. The largest course taught by the department is Human Gross and Developmental Anatomy, which consists of 60 lecture hours in Gross Anatomy and 108 lab hours of cadaver dissection. In addition, this course includes 13 lectures in Embryology and 9 lectures in Radiology. The Histology course comprises 27 lectures and 20 lab hours. Neuroanatomy is taught as part of the Neuroscience course, and consists of 28 lecture hours, 8 lab hours and 6 conference hours. Each course taught by the Anatomy Department is divided across 2 quarters in the first year of the medical school curriculum. The Department is active in the Gift of Body program that provides donated bodies for educational purposes.
Research Facilities: Research facilities at KCOM include a Core Imaging Facility that features a Leica DMI600B confocal laser scanning microscope capable of imaging both fixed and live specimens. Serial optical thin sections assembled into Z-stacks can be used to create images that can be rotated 360° in any direction or spun on an axis for 3-D viewing. The microscope also has FRAP (fluorescence recovery after photobleaching) and FRET (fluorescence resonance energy transfer) capabilities. The laser microscope complements a spinning disk confocal microscope housed on the Truman State University campus, which is available for use by KCOM faculty. Additional equipment available on the KCOM campus include tissue culture facilities, a Li-Cor Odyssey Imaging System, and an RT-PCR lab with gene array capabilities. Research animals are housed without per diem charges in an AAALAC-accredited Animal Care Facility.

The Leica DMI660B confocal laser scanning microscope is available for use by KCOM and Truman State University researchers free of charge. Specimens can be prepared by the researcher or with the assistance of the full-time Core Imaging Technician.
The College: The Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, the founding college of osteopathic medicine, was established in 1892, and is part of the A. T. Still University of Health Sciences. The College has maintained a leadership position in education and research among the nation's 26 osteopathic medical colleges and 6 branch campuses. KCOM is affiliated with Northeast Regional Medical Center located on its campus. The additional schools within the A. T. Still University system are the School of Health Management in Kirksville, the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, the Arizona School of Health Sciences, and the School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona located in Mesa, AZ. Most third and fourth year KCOM students perform their clinical rotations at Regional Rotation Centers in Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio and Utah. Northeast Regional Medical Center: Northeast Regional Medical Center is a 109-bed licensed facility located in Kirksville that serves an 8-county region of northeast Missouri. The hospital is affiliated with Community Health Systems, one of the largest hospital networks in the nation. Northeast is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association. The adult inpatient medical rehabilitation program at the A.T. Still Rehabilitation Center is accredited by CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. Other members associated with Northeast Regional include: the George Rea Cancer Treatment Center, offering comprehensive cancer diagnostic treatment and rehabilitation services; the Health & Fitness Center, a state-of-the-art outpatient rehab center and community health club; Northeast Home Health Services, providing skilled nursing, home health aide, medical and social services and physical, speech and occupational therapy; Northeast Regional Rehabilitation Services, providing physical, speech and occupational therapies to schools, industry, nursing homes, hospitals and in clinics located throughout the region; and The Family Health Center of Edina, a general family practice clinic serving Knox County and the surrounding communities.
The Community: Kirksville is a rural community with a population of about 17,000 and is located in northeast Missouri 90 miles from Columbia, Missouri and 150 miles from Kansas City, Missouri. Besides KCOM with its 350+ on-campus students, the academic nature of the community is provided by Truman State University, which has ~6,000 students and is consistently ranked high among the nation's liberal arts colleges. Kirksville is the trade center for northeast Missouri. Its economic base is derived from academics, medical care, agriculture and several small industries. The Kirksville R-III school district educates 2400 elementary through high school students, and is "Accredited with Distinction" by the state of Missouri.

The Square surrounding the Adair County Courthouse in downtown Kirksville is the site of the autumn Red Barn Arts and Crafts Festival and the Summer on the Square Concert Series, annual events sponsored by the Kirksville Arts Association. The north end of the Square is also the home of the Kirksville Kiwanis Farmers' Market, which features fresh produce, flowers, and baked goods each Saturday morning from May through October.
Recreational Opportunities: Kirksville is located in a prime hunting and fishing region. Open seasons are held for deer, turkey, pheasant, quail, geese, ducks, and other game. Large lakes and small farm ponds abound in the region and provide excellent fishing for many species of pan fish. Thousand Hills State Park, located 3 miles west of Kirksville, contains 3,215 acres of land surrounding the 573-acre Forest Lake. This area provides swimming, camping, fishing, sailing and water skiing. The KCOM Thompson Campus Center provides faculty, staff and students with weight and exercise rooms, racquetball courts and basketball courts, sauna and whirlpool baths. All major spectator sports and multiple cultural events, including the Kohlenberg Lyceum Series, are available at Truman State University. The town also has a country club with an 18-hole golf course, a YMCA with full athletic facilities and a municipal aquatic center with both indoor and outdoor pools.
