On-Site Administration : Hospital Site Information

With the Class of 2005, the Colorado Osteopathic Education Center (COEC) has a total of 43 students in our Region including 22 Kirksville students and 21 students from two other osteopathic colleges. As a branch of the Colorado Society of Osteopathic Medicine, COEC has provided clinical rotations for over 75 students since 1999.

The Colorado Region is a volunteer, community preceptor-based program with over 100 preceptors. This offers an outstanding opportunity for students to train in private offices, ambulatory clinics, and tertiary care facilities as well as experience rural family practice and internal medicine. Ian Levenson, DO, Regional Assistant Dean for Colorado, also ensures that students rotate with preceptors in many area hospitals and medical facilities. An affiliation agreement with HCA/HealthONE enables us to place students with preceptors in any of the HealthONE medical centers in the Denver metropolitan area, including The Medical Center of Aurora North & South, Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center, Rose Medical Center, North Suburban Medical Center, Swedish Medical Center and HealthONE Surgical Centers.

Centennial Peaks Hospital in Louisville provides an excellent state-of-the-art Psychiatry experience, and Community Hospital in Grand Junction was named as one of the 100 Top Hospitals for achievement of excellence in quality of care, efficiency of operations, and sustainability of overall performance. All students complete a rural primary care rotation, usually in Craig, LaJunta, Meeker, Sterling, or Grand Junction, Colorado.

Mandatory attendance is required at monthly OMM Labs, Journal Club, as well as weekly Oral Case Presentations. A newly-developed Education Day Lecture Series will provide additional clinical learning opportunities. A monthly Educational Calendar is distributed with a wide variety of available Grand Rounds, lectures and conferences at the local area teaching hospitals.

All students rotating in the Colorado Region meet together for didactic sessions for a more diverse group discussion providing a better learning environment for everyone.

Home to nearly 3 million residents, Denver is nestled alongside the scenic Rocky Mountains, and surrounding suburbs of Aurora, Parker, Englewood, Greenwood Village, Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Lakewood, Arvada, Westminster, Boulder, Thornton and Golden.

With a metro area rich in culture and diversity, numerous sporting events, outdoor recreation, a prosperous economy and plenty educational opportunities, Denver is fast becoming a most popular choice for both family and single living. Skiing, biking, fishing, camping, hiking and river rafting are in our backyard, and Denver enjoys more than 330 days of sunshine each year.

Through an array of museums, art exhibits, a variety of restaurants and the new aquarium, Denver is growing in culture and activities. The Pepsi Center, Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Invesco Field at Mile-High host big-name performers. With the Denver Broncos, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rockies and the Denver Nuggets, it's a sports community for everyone.

KCOM accredits the first year of the ACGME family medicine residency at St. Mary Corwin/Southern Colorado in Pueblo, CO, with two positions available.

There are 9 ACGME accredited family medicine residencies in Colorado; all have accepted osteopathic medical students. Postgraduate training slots in other specialties are very competitive, with dozens of applicants for each program.

In Colorado, DOs and MDs are well integrated throughout the state, parented by a single licensing board and a single Medical Practice Act.

Ian R. Levenson, D.O.
Assistant Dean for Colorado Region

The Colorado Regional Assistant Dean is Ian Levenson, D.O., who is Past-President of the Colorado society of Osteopathic Medicine (CSOM) and was named by Colorado ACOFP as Colorado Family Physician of the Year in 1997. Dr. Levenson is also the Chair of COEC. Marie Kowalsky serves as the Rotation Site Coordinator for students assigned to the Colorado Region.

It is preferred that students not contact the individual hospitals directly. Rather, questions regarding the Region and hospitals should be directed to members of the On-Site Administration for the Region.
