KCOM-AHEC Program
The KCOM - Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program Office works with the Regional Centers of MAHEC (Missouri Area Health Education Centers) throughout Missouri, as part of the MAHEC Mission, to develop preceptors and practice sites for community-based training activities and facilitate health professions student participation in such activities. This includes:
- Coordination of the Community Experiences and House Calls portions of the Complete DOctor course for KCOM's 1st and 2nd year medical students;
- Preceptor recruitment, student placement, and coordination for the summer two-week Clinical Experiences course for 1st year KCOM medical students;
- Collaboration with Truman State University's Nursing and Health Science programs in developing and implementing interprofessional geriatrics education programs and House Calls including KCOM medical students;
- Collaboration with MAHEC regional centers to provide educational support for medical students and preceptors participating in clinical education in KCOM's Missouri Region, including access to the MAHEC Digital Library, preceptor training, continuing education programs, and on-site support services;
- Strengthening ties with and support for KCOM's primary care preceptors; and
- Evaluation and tracking of experiences to ensure the delivery of high quality clinical education in community-based settings.
This office also offers a web-mediated interactive Medical Spanish elective for KCOM medical students, makes Basic Cardiac Life Support training courses available to KCOM medical students through its American Heart Association-approved Community Training Center, works with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services' Primary Care Resource Initiative for Missouri (PRIMO) health professions student forgiveable loan program, and produces programming to educate and inform medical students about health access issues pertinent to medically underserved patient populations.
