The ATSU-KCOM AHEC Program Office is a partner in the Missouri Area Health Education Centers (MAHEC) network.  The MAHEC Network consists of three university based AHEC Program offices - ATSU-KCOM, University of Missouri Columbia (MU) and Saint Louis University (SLU) - and seven regional AHEC offices.  MAHEC is part of a federally initiated national network of AHECs with programs in nearly every state and territory. 

The ATSU-KCOM AHEC Program Office works with the regional offices of MAHEC throughout Missouri to increase availability of physicians and other health care professionals in Missouri.  AHEC programming focuses on preparing high school and undergraduate students for health professions training; coordinating clinical training in community sites; and enhancing community resources for students and practitioners. 

KCOM students benefit from AHEC services which include:

  • Coordination of the Community Experiences and House Calls portions of the Complete DOctor course for KCOM's 1st and 2nd year medical students
  • Collaboration with MAHEC regional centers to provide
  • Collaboration with Truman State University's Nursing, Communication Disorders, and Health Science programs in developing and implementing interprofessional geriatrics education programs and the Interprofessional option in the House Calls program
  • Development and implementation of the Geriatric Finance module for 3rd year OM students
  • Implementation of the Aging Studies Project initiatives and activities on the Kirksville campus including IPE and service learning activities
  • Strengthening ties with and support for KCOM's primary care preceptors
  • Evaluation and tracking of experiences to ensure and document the delivery of high quality clinical education in community-based settings

The ATSU-KCOM AHEC office also:

  • partners with Truman State University language faculty to offer Medical Spanish courses for KCOM medical students
  • operates the regional American Heart Association Community Training Center
  • provides recruitment activities and community linkages for the Missouri School of Dentistry and Oral Health (MOSDOH)
  • convenes several advisory groups to inform and guide programmatic planning and implementation
  • produces programming to educate and inform medical students about health access issues pertinent to medically underserved patient populations
  • seeks resources and manages funding awards  for targeted projects
