« Previous Page Table of Contents Next Page »Osteopathic medicine is a unique form of American medical care developed in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., D.O. Osteopathic physicians (D.O.s) embrace a holistic philosophy, considering the body as a unit of interrelated systems that work together to ensure optimal health.
Today, approximately 70,000 D.O.s actively practice in the United States, and 100 million patient visits are made to D.O.s each year. As fully licensed doctors, D.O.s practice traditional forms of medicine in primary care and specialties, prescribe medications, and perform surgery.
More than half of all D.O.s practice in these primary care areas: • general practice • internal medicine • obstetrics/gynecology • pediatrics
