Search: Vice President for Academic Affairs - A.T. Still University of Health Sciences

A.T. Still University of Health Sciences is seeking a senior administrator to serve as Vice President for Academic Affairs. The VPAA will report directly to the President of the University and will be responsible for providing academic leadership on two campuses.ATSU is a diverse, rapidly growing, health sciences institution with campuses in Kirksville, Missouri, and Mesa, Arizona, enrolling approximately 3,400 students in all programs. The University supports five major academic units which include two osteopathic medicine programs, a school of dentistry, a school of health science, and an online school of health management. ATSU is the founding school of osteopathic medicine.

The responsibilities of the Vice President for Academic Affairs will include, but will not necessarily be limited to, the following:

  • In collaboration with the President, provide leadership for all academic programs across the University and work closely with the respective deans to assure the excellence of ATSU’s programmatic offerings;
  • Recruit, select, and evaluate all academic deans, chair the Deans’ Council, and in cooperation with the deans oversee faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation;
  • Support and nurture the development of a University-wide Faculty Senate and facilitate the establishment of an appropriate role for faculty in University governance;
  • Work with the deans, faculty, and other University officials to implement a robust assessment program and a new University strategic plan; and
  • Provide leadership for increased involvement of both clinical and basic science faculty in scholarship and grantsmanship.

The successful candidate will have the following skills and accomplishments:

  • An earned doctorate in an appropriate academic discipline from an accredited institution;
  • Significant higher education administrative experience, ideally including a complex, multi-campus environment, plus a record of achievement as a teacher and scholar in either the classroom or a clinical setting;
  • Demonstrated success working with diverse campus constituencies that includes faculty, senior administrators, staff, and students;
  • Broad knowledge of national trends in health science education and healthcare delivery; and
  • Superior written, oral, and listening communication skills.

Kirksville, Missouri, the home of osteopathic medicine, is located in the rural northeastern part of the state in an area of nearly 20,000 residents. A thriving college town (with Truman State University, Missouri’s highly selective public liberal arts and sciences university), Kirksville offers a low cost of living and a high quality of life. Residents enjoy a variety of cultural and recreational activities that appeal to a wide range of interests.

Mesa, Arizona, is the state’s third largest city, close to Phoenix, the state capital. A progressive city of 445,000 residents, Mesa is in a vibrant urban setting with a first-class environment, highly educated population (Arizona State University is nearby), and a high quality of life, close to major league sports teams, two national parks, and hundreds of miles of trails.
